Rosca de Reyes

January 6th is El Dia de los Reyes Magos, or The Day of the Kings. This is the day that the Three Wise Men visited the baby Jesus, according to Catholic tradition. If you'd like to know more about it, read this or this. In a nutshell, The Day of the Kings is the day that kids in Mexico get presents from the Wise Men (instead of from Santa on Dec. 25), and they eat a traditional sweet bread, called Rosca de Reyes, with cinnamon hot chocolate.

We took our Rosca de Reyes over to the Stimpsons (Jose was holding Catherine; Clark was nowhere to be found and way too busy playing to take a picture with mom and dad) and made our YUMMY hot chocolate with them. There were a couple of plastic babies baked into the bread (to symbolize Jesus being hidden from Herod) and when we sliced it (symbolizing Herod's knife) Jose and Michael each got one in their piece of bread. That means that on Feburary 2nd (The day Mary took Jesus to the Temple, supposedly) Jose and Michael get to throw a party for the kids and give them candy, whoo hoo! I just hope I can take down my Christmas decorations before then!

I love hearing about other people's traditions. Thanks for sharing!
That sound so similar to the King Cakes eaten during Mardi Gras in New Orleans right down to the plastic baby. There if you get the piece with the baby you are responsible for bringing the next King Cake. We will be up there next week Maddie plays in a volleyball tournament and Matt has a baseball tournament. We have not seen you guys in forever. Clark is such a cute little guy.

Thanks for sharing your tradition with us. The next day on Dora there was a special on...Day of the Kings. It meant a lot more that we had just eaten the rosca de reyes with you the night before. Otherwise I wouldn't have thought twice about it. We love Dora, my life is so exciting!
